Reimagining the Scholarly Conference
To support the range of options, and flexibility needed in our current climate, we will offer a blended conference experience. You do not need to commit either to a place-based or virtual presentation at the time of submission. You can present both ways, or change your mode of the presentation if your preferences change. The choice to participate virtually could also be a moral decision – for the planet, for security, or when the financial burden of travel is too great. We seek to foster spaces that align with principles of social justice and community development — particularly in difficult times.
We also want to be ready for the possibility of place-based postponement due to COVID-19. If we are forced to postpone, the online engagement will still go ahead, and your registration will allow you to join the conference in person in a later year.
This way we build for our Research Network Members flexible, and at the same time resilient, spaces for communication, engagement, and participation.
Themes and Special Focus
The Thirteenth International Conference on Climate Change: Impacts & Responses is brought together by a common concern for the science of, and social responses to, climate change. We seek to build an epistemic community where we can make linkages across disciplinary, geographic, and cultural boundaries. We invite proposals addressing one of the following themes or special focus:

Themes and Special Focus
Founded in 2009, the Climate Change: Impacts & Responses Research Network is brought together by a common concern for the science of, and social responses to, climate change. We seek to build an epistemic community where we can make linkages across disciplinary, geographic, and cultural boundaries. As a Research Network, we are defined by our scope and concerns and motivated to build strategies for action framed by our shared themes and tensions.
The Thirteenth International Conference on Climate Change: Impacts & Responses features research addressing the following annual themes. Each year we also focus on a Special Focus that presents a timely challenge.
- 2021 Special Focus: Responding to Climate Change as an Emergency
- THEME 1: THE NATURE OF EVIDENCE
- THEME 2: ASSESSING IMPACTS IN DIVERSE ECOSYSTEMS
- THEME 3: HUMAN IMPACTS AND RESPONSIBILITY
- THEME 4: TECHNICAL, POLITICAL, AND SOCIAL RESPONSES

Benefits of Becoming a Presenter
Our mission is to provide a safe, sustainable, and accessible way for us to come together and interact as a Research Network. We are taking on these challenges by offering a blended conference experience. with session types explicitly designed to make the most of both online and in-person social knowledge processes.
1Present to a Global Audience
We pride ourselves on the global diversity of our network members. Add your voice, in-person or online, by submitting a proposal today. You will need the following: presentation type, short/long descriptions, keywords, focus, themes, and biographical information.
Also remember, you do not need to commit either to a place-based or virtual presentation at the time of submission. You can present both ways, or change your mode of the presentation if your preferences change.
View our Step-by-Step Guide to submitting a presentation proposal.
2Personalized Presentation Pages
The development team at the Common Ground Media Lab has been working tirelessly to create a next-generation web platform to support a robust blended conference experience.
All presenters are given personal Presenter Pages: Linked to profile page on CGScholar, displaying abstract summary, thematic connection to panelists and peers, ability to add digital media: video, sound, other files.
For a full feature list, see our Presenters Page guide.
3Publishing Opportunities
We are working to change the way in which knowledge is produced, validated, and shared within member-based Research Networks.
The International Journal of Climate Change: Impacts and Responses and Book Imprint offer pathways to transform your presentation into formal research objects. We also support a number of affordable Open Access pathways to allow maximum flexibility to support principles of open research, in a sustainable manner.
